Welcome
Welcome to the practice of Niccolo D. Della Penna, M.D. I am an experienced board-certified psychiatrist with a diverse background. Since 2007, I have continuously practiced in the same office in the Green Spring Station area.
About Dr. Della Penna
I am an accomplished board-certified psychiatrist who completed residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where I was one of the Chief Residents. Prior to that, I received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Northwestern University and then a Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. I was selected for entry into the Honors Program in Medical Education, which was an elite 7-year combined undergraduate/medical school program for talented applicants in high school.
Prior background
- Director of the general hospital psychiatry division at the University of Chicago providing psychiatric consultations to patients in the entire hospital
- Assistant program director of the psychiatry residency program at the University of Chicago
- Medical director of a combined inpatient psychiatric facility and detoxification/rehabilitation center
- Attending psychiatrist in multiple emergency departments in Baltimore to evaluate patients with acute clinical needs
- Consulting psychiatrist to a local premier alcohol and drug rehabilitation facility
- Consultant to numerous international patients and traveled to many countries around the world to provide assessments and ongoing management
Approach to Treatment & Services Offered
When performing a comprehensive evaluation with a patient, I integrate both medical and psychiatric management into a thorough treatment plan. As one of the few psychiatrists who offers and performs psychotherapy, treatment goals are established and pursued through well-considered medication selections when necessary, and with traditional psychotherapeutic techniques.
After being broadly trained in all areas of psychiatry, I specialize in these particular areas:
- Mood disorders (major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder)
- Anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobias)
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Addiction psychiatry (alcohol, opioid, gambling and other forms of addiction)
- Independent medical examinations (state medical boards, disability, occupational evaluations)
- Expert witness testimony
Personal life
I was born and raised in a small suburb of Chicago and when I was young, I set numerous goals for myself. Because I was interested in aviation from a very young age, one of these was to successfully solo an aircraft before receiving my driver’s license at the age of 16.
I also found the study of languages technically interesting, useful and also a great exercise in cultural understanding. After studying German for just a few years, I set the objective to backpack on my own throughout Germany during high school to prove to myself that I was competent in my skills. At present, I have decent competence in German and Italian, the latter of which is personally meaningful as a part of my proud heritage of being in a family from the Abruzzo region of the country.
However, one of the earliest goals that I had was the idea of becoming a physician. What drew me to this was realizing that a physician was a person who was able to heal or cure through the competence of scientific medical abilities. The integration of solving a health problem through scientific knowledge was a skill that seemed both honorable and was a type of technical mastery that I wanted to achieve. Although I entered medical school not knowing what type of physician I wanted to become, I learned after doing my clinical rotation in psychiatry that being a psychiatrist allowed a closer connection with patients. It provided the opportunity to understand a patient’s difficulties on a personal and human level even more than in other areas of medicine. As a psychiatrist, I found the privilege that one is given with patients to be much closer to my original interpretation of what a good doctor was: a confidential, technically-skilled and empathic healer who could be trusted with one’s most private and difficult challenges in life.
When I am not working in the office, I am usually researching my next new regional Italian meal to make, following the latest Formula One news, trying to find time to watch Serie A or Bundesliga games or cycling in the early hours of the morning.
